Hierarchy of settlements
– the arrangement of settlements in order of size. In ascending order this is: hamlet, village, town, city, conurbation.
Rural deprivation – the incidence of low standards of living in rural areas. The indicators used to illustrate rural deprivation include unemployment, average income and access to services.
Rural settlement – includes isolated buildings and farms, hamlets and villages. Small market towns are sometimes included in rural settlement.
Service decline – the reduction in the number of services provided in a settlement or region.
